《Images Between Me and Plants》

Photography can only acquire physical substance through either capturing on film or printing. Therefore, I find it unsettling that there is a disconnect between the printed paper and the image being printed.
The feature of this artwork is the complete sameness between the plant I took and the paper I printed.Mulberry leaves captured in the artwork are the leaves with my favorite scent, and I always want to capture even that scent.Thus, the impetus for me to take photos isn’t always based on solely visual impressions.And so, I turned my attention toward the support for printing the photograph.
In this artwork, I first capture the plant. Afterward, I cut down that and created the paper for printing the picture I captured. And then, print the picture on the finished paper.
By doing this, the image of a plant, which was previously only a plane representation, actually materializes on paper in front of the viewer’s eyes.
In this artwork, I present the photograph of a captured plant and the paper used for printing as one and the same, shaping it into a photographic composition. By doing so, I aim to share with others not only the visual image but also the sensory experiences, such as the scent I perceived from the plant during the moment of capture. The viewer who looks at the artwork simultaneously witnesses the image of plants I once saw in the mountains and the transformed paper representation of those very same plants.
写真メディアは、フィルムで撮る、またはプリントをすることでしか、質量をもつことができない。だが私は、プリントした紙と、プリントするイメージの間の関係性のなさに違和感を覚えている。本作品では、撮った植物と、撮った写真をプリントする紙を同一のものとして写真作品の形に提示する。そうすることで、私が撮影時に植物から感じた匂いなどをも、他者と共有しようとしているのである。
この作品の特徴は、撮影した植物と、それをプリントした紙が同一であるということだ。本作品で撮影されている桑の葉は、私が最も好きな香りの葉であり、常々その香りをも写したいと思っている。このように、私が普段写真を撮ろうとするきっかけは必ずしも視覚的印象ではない。そこで私は、写真をプリントするための支持体に眼を向けたのだった。
まず初めに植物を撮る。その後、植物を伐採し、撮った写真をプリントするための紙を漉いて作る。そして、出来上がった紙に植物を撮影した写真を印刷する。こうすることで、平面的なイメージでしかない被写体の植物の像が、実際に、鑑賞者の眼の前に紙となって表出する。この作品を見る鑑賞者は、私がかつて山の中で見ていた植物の映像を見ているし、また、私が加工して紙になった植物の姿を同時に見てもいるのだ。
